Project Title

The potential of microbes as a biodegrader and growth promoter of rice (Oryza sativa)

Candidates are expected to meet the following requirements :

• Having a first class or upper second class degree (with Honours) with background either in Agriculture, Biology, Biotechnology, Biodiversity or a relevant discipline.
• Possessing a good command of English and Bahasa Malaysia.
• Being highly motivated and able to work resourcefully and independently.

Duration: 02 years

Duration: 3 years (PhD Program)/ 2 years (Master Program)

Additional skills and requirements :

  1. Must know how to swim (for collecting of marine fungi samples) – only for Microbial Biotechnology
  2. Hard-working and able to conduct an independent research project using both laboratory and field work
  3. Candidate with good communication and writing skills

Entry Qualification
Candidates who wish to enter into the postgraduate programme must have the following qualifications:
  Master’s Programme
1. Bachelor’s degree in related field with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent from UMT or any other higher institution recognized by the Senate; or2. Bachelor’s degree in related field with a CGPA below 2.75 or equivalent qualification and possesses evidence of relevant and adequate research or work experience recognized by the Senate; or3. Any other academic qualification in related field and possesses evidence of adequate research or work experience recognized by the Senate.
  Doctor of Philospohy Programme
1. Master’s degree from UMT or any other higher institution recognized by the Senate; or2. Any other qualification equivalent to a Master’s degree and possesses evidence of adequate research or work experience recognized by the Senate; or3. Outstanding Master student from UMT who has been approved for conversion; or4. First Class bachelor’s degree or equivalent from UMT or any higher institution recognized by the Senate.

Pogrammes by Research.

Graduate programmes under this structure are for both Masters and Doctoral level programme emphasize mostly on research as the major requirement for attaining the degrees. While there is no specific number of credits required for graduation, students are required to enroll some courses to strengthen their knowledge base. They are also required to participate in academic discussions and seminar presentations. At the end of the programme, they are required to submit a thesis to the Thesis Examination Committee as a significant contribution the knowledge mastered in the chosen field.
