Biography

Dahlia is a plant pathologist with expertise in the area of fungal pathology and plant disease control. She is a lecturer in the School of Food Science and Technology within the Crop Science Subject Group. Dahlia’s teaching specialisms include plant pathology, crop protection and organic farming. She had developed her interest in plant diseases when she pursued her MSc by doing research on Fusarium species focusing on the tropical plant diseases. In 2011, she continued her study and developed more understanding of plant disease management by joining the CEP group (Crop and Environmental Protection Group) from University of Hertfordshire. She had spending most of her time in the autumn and summer at the field in Rothamsted Research, Harpenden and several other field sites in the UK which she found those experience provide an ideal opportunity to integrate her research into undergraduate teaching. Now, she actives with silicon group to understand silicon and biotic stress in suppressing plant diseases. She also enjoys being in the island especially Chagar Hutang, Redang island where she dedicates herself in helping the turtle research work as her part of conservation contribution. Her interest of Fusarium expands by looking at the infection of this soil-borne fungus on the turtle eggs that may threaten the precious endangered species of turtle in Malaysia. She also leads the fungal pathogens monitoring turtle hatcheries and the treasurer for TCS (Turtle Conservation Society) and, lead research interest group (RIG) Biointeractions and Crop Health in the University with four PhD students and six MSc students.

Dahlia is a member of the Malaysian Society for Microbiology (MSM), British Society of Plant Pathology (BSPP), Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), The Malaysian Plant Protection Society (MPPS), The International Society for Silicon in Agriculture and Related Disciplines (ISSAG) and International Sea Turtle Society (ISTS) and Turtle Conservation Society (TCS). Dahlia is passionate about microbiology and she welcome any enquiries from external organizations, NGOs, schools especially in giving talks or seminars on her plant pathology work or turtle!

Research  Interests

In the last 13 years have included, plant disease diagnosis symptomless and complex infections by mycological and molecular. Pathogenicity and disease control management with special reference to fungal pathogens;  Fusarium, Colletotrichum, Phytophthora, Aspergillus and Leptosphaeria species as well as sea turtle egg fusariosis (STEF). Optimising fungicide use in crops in relation to development of rational disease control strategies. Forecasting risk of severe disease epidemics for individual crops in relation to adaptation to climate change
