2) MSc by research opportunity

Project Title
Genetic variation of Rigidoporous lignosus isolates associated with white root rot disease of Malaysian recommended rubber clones

Project summary
Rubber is cultivated in many countries around the world, including Malaysia. Rigidoporus lignosus syn. Rigidoporus microporus is a destructive root pathogen of rubber, causing the white root rot disease. In Malaysia, R. lignosus has been reported to occur and cause significant losses of rubber in Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular. This project aims to characterise the genetic diversity of R. lignosus in Malaysia based on morphological characteristics, and molecular analysis using intersimple sequence repeats (ISSR), a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based molecular method, and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS).

Candidates are expected to meet the following requirements :

• Having a first class or upper second class degree (with Honours) with background either in plant pathology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics or a relevant discipline.
• Possessing a good command of English and Bahasa Malaysia.
• Being highly motivated and able to work resourcefully and independently.

Duration: 02 years

How to apply
Applications should consist of (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) academic transcripts, and (3) a short (1 page maximum) statement letter describing the motivation to pursue this MSc.
